WHAT DO I LOOK FOR IN A CAR BATTERY ?

START -UP POWER (CCA)

The start-up power of a car battery needs to be sufficient to start your vehicle in all conditions, which is allot to ask of a car battery as here in the UK we have allot of different weather conditions over the year and the fluctuations in temperature are what causes faster damage to a car battery than either constant high or low temperatures. As car batteries age the power in them will reduce also.

Start-up power is what is known as Cold Cranking Amps or CCA for short, when you look at your present car battery you may see a label on the top or front that states the Cold Cranking Amps or CCA. The higher the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) of a battery are the better as the car battery will turn the engine over much easier especially in very cold temperatures. 

Calcium car batteries have a higher Cold Cranking Amp (CCA) rating than a standard car battery because car batteries with Calcium in are much better conductors of electricity. Calcium car batteries also tend to better at coping with the occasional deep discharge such as when you leave your lights on or car stereo, which more times than not will cause damage to a standard battery.

RESERVE CAPACITY (RC)

The Reserve Capacity of a car battery is very important if you have any additional electrical equipment in your vehicle such as sat nav, tv screens, audio equipment ect. The Reserve Capacity is also important in the event of alternator failure, when the car battery will be powering the vehicle on its own.

The Reserve Capacity is the power kept in reserve in the battery in minutes, for this amount of time the car battery should be able to power your vehicle before discharging, so Reserve Capacity is worth looking for on your replacement car battery as a higher RC is better in every case.
